Tuesday in Tampa: Princess Ulele Removed, Helping the Homeless, and More

A crash involving a pedestrian and multiple vehicles last night left one man dead in Tarpon Springs. The wheelchair-bound pedestrian was crossing the street when he was struck by a car. He was thrown from his wheelchair into the street and was then hit by another car. The man was transported to the hospital where he died early this morning. The crash is under investigation.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers collaborated with the Tampa Police Department to launch a social justice initiative. Today’s event discussed police relations. “We as a community, black, white, Hispanic, young, old, gay, straight, recognize the job these men and women do for us,” said Bob Buckhorn.

The team is focusing on four issues in the Tampa Bay area, including criminal justice reform, racial equality, youth empowerment, and police relations. The Buccaneers will be hosting monthly events for the next year.

A historic site on the Tampa Riverwalk is now gone. The Princess Ulele bust was removed this morning. The bust was located on city property.

The mayor’s office said the city wants to keep the Riverwalk free of clutter. The bust will be stored in a warehouse for now.

Hundreds of homeless people in Hillsborough County have new haircuts and clean clothes. Vendors, nonprofits, and the sheriff’s office joined forces to help the homeless community where they were able to shower, do laundry, receive job assistance and free healthcare. The event was hosted by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Homeless Initiative in order to provide those in need with access to important necessities to sustain themselves.

Also in attendance was Quinton Aaron, who starred in The Blind Side. Aaron is part of the nonprofit Forgotten Angels and founder of the Quinton Aaron Foundation, which focuses on youth development. The Community Homeless Outreach event is hosted quarterly throughout the year.
